## Fishing Regulations

RED SNAPPER:
- Federal season (Gulf waters 9+ miles): Usually opens June 1, runs approximately 2-3 weeks. Check current year's dates.
- Alabama state waters (within 9 miles): Extended season, typically opens late May through Labor Day weekend with intermittent weekend openings through fall.
- Bag limit: 2 per person per day (federal), same in state waters
- Minimum size: 16 inches total length
- Must have reef fish endorsement on saltwater fishing license
- Red snapper are found on reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures in 60-200+ feet of water

GROUPER:
- Red grouper: Open year-round with closures Feb 1 - Mar 31
- Gag grouper: Season typically Jan 1 - May 31, reopens later in year
- Bag limit: 4 per person aggregate grouper
- Minimum size varies by species (20-24 inches)

AMBERJACK (GREATER):
- Season: Typically opens May 1, closes when quota is met
- Bag limit: 1 per person per day
- Minimum size: 34 inches fork length
- Found around wrecks and structures in deeper water

TRIGGERFISH (GRAY):
- Season: March 1 - May 31 (varies by year)
- Bag limit: 1 per person per day
- Minimum size: 15 inches total length

KING MACKEREL:
- Open year-round
- Bag limit: 3 per person per day (Gulf)
- Minimum size: 24 inches fork length

COBIA:
- Open year-round
- Bag limit: 1 per person per day
- Minimum size: 33 inches fork length
- Often caught sight-fishing near buoys and structures

GENERAL INFO:
- Alabama saltwater fishing license required for ages 16+
- Charter boats typically provide all licenses, tackle, bait, and equipment
- Best months for offshore fishing: May through September
- Water temps peak July-August, best variety of species
- Hurricane season June-November can affect scheduling

## What's In Season Now

As of September 11, 2026:

Red snapper for-hire season usually still open. The bull redfish run fires up in the pass, king mackerel fall run begins, and tuna and wahoo are offshore. Great month with smaller crowds.
